OTTAWA – Tomorrow evening, MPs and members of the Green Party of Canada will join concerned citizens, businesses and governments across the globe in turning off the lights for Earth Hour.
Established by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007, this seventh annual Earth Hour will be observed in over 7,000 cities and across more than 150 countries worldwide, from 8:30 to 9:30 PM in each local time zone.
“I know people in my riding are serious about climate action 365 days of the year,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich–Gulf Islands. “We have a high level of participation in Earth Hour.” Sidney by the Sea, where May lives, and North Saanich, nearby and in her riding, were two of BC's most successful electricity reducers during Earth Hour 2013.
“Earth Hour is an important opportunity to pause and reflect on how much remains to be done to combat rising GHG levels and stave off climate crisis,” said Bruce Hyer, Green Deputy Leader and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay–Superior North. “The global popularity of events like this is a testament to the fact that millions of people around the world all calling for climate action.”
Here in Ottawa, local Green Party riding associations will be hosting their annual Candlelight Vigil on Parliament Hill. The event begins at 8:00 PM at the Centennial Flame, more details are available here.
