Syria Statement by Elizabeth May

OTTAWA – Statement from Green Leader Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands:

“I was briefed yesterday by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. I appreciate the respect shown in including me in the briefings of Opposition leaders.

“I expressed to Mr. Baird that no military action should take place in the absence of a UN resolution. Military action is unlikely to resolve the conflict and could, in fact, worsen the humanitarian crisis.

“Even though Canada deserves credit for humanitarian efforts, reportedly the 6th most generous provider of assistance, we should do more.

“Greens believe Canada should be actively urging all nation states to pressure both the Assad Regime and its opponents to enter into a ceasefire and negotiate a settlement.”
