Green Party pledges support for People’s Food Policy Project

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada is pledging its support for the vision and ideals of the People’s Food Policy Project (PFPP). Yesterday the Project held a press conference on Parliament Hill calling on all parties to support a national food policy for Canada.

“The Green Party has made clear its intention to develop a national food policy for Canada. We called for greater democracy in our food system, giving Canadians more power to be informed about and choose where their food comes from and how it’s grown,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party. “This grassroots initiative, the People’s Food Policy Project, is a perfect example of democracy in food policy, and I am pleased to support it.”

The PFPP released its report Resetting the Table yesterday, which makes recommendations for a national food policy including: localizing the system so that food is eaten as close as possible to where it is produced, supporting food providers in a widespread shift to ecological production, including programs to support new farmers getting on the land, enacting federal poverty elimination and prevention programs to ensure Canadians can better afford healthy food, creating a nationally-funded children and food strategy, and ensuring that the public is actively involved in decisions that affect the food system. These recommendations from the PFPP align very closely with the food policies the Green Party has been proposing in Vision Green.

“I am pleased to sign the pledge to support a national food policy that connects food, health, agriculture, the environment and social justice, and I call on the other party leaders, and all candidates in this election, to do the same,” said Ms. May.
