Announcing Sameer Muldeen as Critic on Animal Issues

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada is pleased to announce Sameer Muldeen as Critic on Animal Issues.  Mr. Muldeen’s role will be especially concerned with the status and welfare of animals in the Canadian legislation.

A Green since 2007, Mr. Muldeen is particularly concerned with the ethical and environmental impact of intensive animal farming. “With increasing food demand from emerging countries like China and India, it is critical to give proper attention to the way livestock is raised in Canada and worldwide,” said Mr. Muldeen.  “This issue is especially important given the 2006 UN report demonstrating that livestock account for 18% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, more than the entire transport industry combined.”*

A volunteer for his local animal shelter, Sameer believes strongly in the intelligence and sensitivity of animals, a lesson that has been reinforced by his adopted dog. “When it comes to property, most Canadians know there’s a difference between owning a chair and a dog. It is time for our laws to be updated in order to better protect animals from illegal breeding, exploitation, abuse and neglect.”  Green Party MPs will sponsor legislation that makes acts of cruelty to animals an offence under the criminal code and not just a property offence as it stands now.

Sameer Muldeen is the official Green Party of Canada candidate for LaSalle-Émard.
