Elizabeth May, Jacques Rivard and Greens in Copenhagen

OTTAWA -- Green Leader Elizabeth May will arrive in Copenhagen on Friday, December 11, joining Deputy Leader Jacques Rivard, who is arriving the day before, in efforts to ensure an effective successor climate treaty to the Kyoto Accord.  They will unite with a large delegation of Global Greens, including New Zealand Green MPs Jeannette Fitzsimons and Kennedy Graham, Australian Senator Christine Milne, Leader of Brazilian Greens and former Minister of Environment in Lula Government Marina Silva, German member of the European Union Parliament Rebecca Harms, Irish Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government John Gormley, Minister of Environment from Czech Republic Martin Bursik and many more.

“Green voices are desperately needed in Copenhagen,” said May.  “The importance of this meeting can not be overstated. Truly, if we fail to take action now, it will impact the future of our civilization.”

May and Rivard will be communicating with followers via blogs and video clips to be posted on the Green Party of Canada website: http://greenparty.ca/copenhagen.

“We will do everything in our power to influence the negotiations so that we can emerge with a global agreement to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including pressuring our own government negotiators to stop blocking progress,” said Rivard.

December 10th, on a layover at Halifax Airport, Elizabeth May will address interested citizens on the topic of Copenhagen and climate change in Salon 200, Airport Hotel at 7:30 pm AT.

December 13th, from 18:00 to 21:00, Elizabeth May will speak as part of Global Greens Public Event, moderated by Monica Frassoni, Spokesperson of the European Green Party. Other speakers include: Rebecca Harms, Co-President of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament; Marina Silva, Brazilian Green Party’s potential Presidential Candidate, former Environment Minister of Brazil; Wangari Maathai, Nobel Laureate, Kenyan Green, former deputy Environment Minister of Kenya (to be confirmed); José Bové, Renowned global environmental activist, Green Member of the European Parliament; Christine Milne, Australian Green Senator and Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens; Catherine Grèze, French Green MEP.
