Greens Demand Release of Transport Canada Car Seat Safety Study
OTTAWA – The Green Party is demanding the Conservative government release the results of six years worth of car seat safety tests conducted by Transport Canada. The CBC has reported that Transport Canada is refusing to make safety test results public because the information may cause “material damage to the private sector”.
“Transport Canada is tasked with ensuring road safety – not with protecting private sector profits,” said Green Party leader Elizabeth May. “It is deeply troubling that critical research on car seat safety is being withheld. Canadian taxpayers funded this research and the Canadian public deserves to learn the results.”
Ms. May said putting business interests above consumer safety is unacceptable and Transport Canada has no right to withhold research from the Canadians who footed the bill. The Green Party is committed to replacing the current culture of government secrecy with one of transparency and openness.
