Green Party applauds Obama administration’s decision to reject Keystone pipeline

(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party and MP (Saanich-Gulf Islands), commended the Obama administration’s decision today to reject TransCanada Corporation’s application to build the Keystone XL pipeline.

“We applaud the US decision. The Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) given to the US Department of State made it clear that Keystone would contribute to oil sands expansion and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

“President Obama said in his announcement that the Keystone pipeline would not make a meaningful contribution to the US economy. This is also true for Canada. Investment in green energy –like wind, solar and hydro– creates over 7x more jobs per dollar invested when compared to investment in traditional energy sectors.

“This decision helps Canada confront the need to level off the bitumen production in the oil sands and set a course to decarbonizatuon of our economy.”
