Statement by the Green Party of Canada on the Tragic Shootings in Paris

(OTTAWA) - The Green Party of Canada extends its sincerest condolences to the individuals and families affected by the tragedy in Paris. This morning, millions of people who have followed these journalists and cartoonists over many decades were saddened by the horror of this calamity.

“On behalf of myself and the Green Party of Canada, I offer our heartfelt compassion and sympathy to the people of France,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands. “Canadians are deeply affected by the brutality of this morning’s events. Our prayers are with the families of the victims.”

Green Party Deputy Leader Daniel Green added that he was horrified by the direct assault on journalism and democracy in France.

“The carnage that occurred in Paris today was nothing short of a direct attack on the principles of democracy and freedom of press,” said Mr. Green. “We must, in the face of adversity, continue on and not give into fear.”

This morning, three gunmen opened fire on the staff of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine located in Paris, leaving at least 12 people dead and many others injured.
