Richmond Hill

Gwen Veenema is a university student majoring in history with a focus on gender and women’s studies. Gwen was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario and currently lives in Halifax where she studies at both the University of King’s College and Dalhousie University. As a socially engaged student, Gwen is passionate about issues pertaining to postsecondary education.

Green issues and sustainable practises have always been important to Gwen, particularly as they pertain to local sourcing of food, sustainable agriculture and community gardening. Living in both urban centres and rural areas, Gwen has always maintained her own garden and enjoys growing her own food. Gwen has worked in the coffee industry for five years and has notably been employed at T.A.N. - The Sustainable Coffee Network in Wolfville , Nova Scotia where she learned about fair trade, direct trade and socially responsible coffee production.

Gwen is interested in many local issues, including reducing food waste in grocery stores and restaurants and making public transit more accessible and convenient. As a member of the LGBTQ community, Gwen wants to help make Pride parades less corporatized and more inclusive, intersectional and green. She is also a member of the Halifax Sports and Social Club and is always looking to establish and advocate for more recreational or creative community groups.

The Green Party of Canada is excited to have Gwen Veenema as our candidate in the riding of Richmond Hill.
