Hamilton West—Ancaster—Dundas

Peter Ormond is a professional engineer who holds an MBA from Queen’s University, and a Masters in Environmental Engineering from the University of Alberta. He works as an Energy Manager with Horizon Utilities, helping companies to reduce their energy consumption. Peter is also an environmental consultant with his own company, ECO5.

His focus is on projects that support communities, corporations and individuals as they pursue responsible energy management (conservation & renewables), adaption to climate change and sustainability practices. His clients have included the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Peel Region, and the City of Hamilton. A life-long Hamiltonian, Peter graduated from Westdale High School, the tenth of eleven siblings.

Peter has been an active Green Party member and has previously run as a Green Party candidate at the provincial and federal levels. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Solar Industries Association, and a founding member and board member of Hamilton’s Community Car Share Cooperative. He has renovated and lives in a 19th Century Worker’s Cottage in Hamilton, which serves as an example of the types of transformation that is possible in our community. His Green Cottage is a sustainable home that features installations of solar hot water, solar photovoltaic, rain barrels, a green roof, several raised bed square-foot gardens, ex-sulation and a wood interior finished with re-furbished materials. The home has been used for many newspaper and TV stories, as well as for Open Doors Ontario tours.

Peter often teaches and guest lectures in Hamilton. He recently taught a renewable energy course as part of the YWCA – Mohawk College bridging program for New Canadians. Peter has extensive experience in the international field including attending and presenting at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change meetings in Montreal, Poland and Denmark. He has also worked on energy projects throughout Canada and in the United States, Mexico and Korea.

On the creative side, Peter has written, produced and performed in various plays and films. Several have been featured in the Hamilton Fringe Festival. He has hosted a “Green Sense” weekly radio show at McMaster’s CFMU station, and web-based “Green TV” on newscliptv.ca.

Wise energy use, robust mass transit, local economies and local healthy food supplies are all part of revitalizing the local network of unique communities that surround us. Peter believes that Canadians, especially Hamiltonians, are ready for leadership that rethinks old habits and steps into new realms of possibilities. He believes it’s time for fresh energy and thoughtful collaborative action.
