Green Party’s Plan will help Students and Seniors

May: “Let’s proceed with Phase II of Canada’s universal healthcare system: a national Pharmacare Program”

(GUELPH) –Tonight, at a Town Hall in Guelph, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and candidate for Guelph Gord Miller highlighted the Green Party’s commitment to Canadian seniors and students.

Mr. Miller cited Guelph’s large student population and the need to eliminate the burden of student debt. “Our plan to cut student debt above $10,000 will significantly relieve the financial burden that many Canadian students and their families struggle with everyday,” stated Mr. Miller.

“It is unacceptable that in many cases four years of education will take 20 years to pay off,” said Mr. Miller.

Seniors was another major topic at the Guelph Town Hall tonight. Ms. May spoke about the Green Party’s plan for a National Pharmacare Program, which will ensure seniors can afford to fill their prescriptions.

“By working collaboratively in the next minority government, we will implement Phase II of Canada’s universal healthcare system– a national Pharmacare Program –immediately,” said Ms. May. “We know that an overwhelming 91% of Canadians fully support this plan. It will save billions of dollars, improve health outcomes and make sure Canadians can afford the medications they need.”

Ms. May and Mr. Miller said that the Green Party’s plan for a Guaranteed Liveable Income (GLI) will support people of all ages. It will supplement seniors’ pensions and help student and their families. The GLI will make sure Canadians have enough income for health, life, and dignity.

May noted that seniors on fixed incomes are particularly vulnerable and Green MPs recognize the unique needs of our aging population.
