“Canadians expect and deserve a Canada that works together…” Elizabeth May.
(OTTAWA) - A motion introduced by Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP (Saanich- Gulf Islands), to table the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) report, today received unanimous consent.
“The TRC findings provide an unprecedented accounting of a horrific policy of cultural genocide. We are now challenged – across jurisdictions – to walk the path to true reconciliation. I was pleased to see MPs from all parties recognize the importance of tabling the TRC’s findings before the House adjourns,” said Ms. May.
“The stories collected by the TRC describe the abuses endured by thousands of innocent children. These recommendations give us the means to work with First Nations communities to overcome the historical and ongoing injustices.”
“I am overwhelmed that the House has unanimously agreed to table the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission,” added Lorraine Rekmans, Green Party Indigenous Affairs Critic and candidate (Leeds -- Grenville -- Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes). “This is an important but ugly part of our history and our identity in Canada and this story must be told. This vote shows a true commitment and the political will to address injustice. All political parties need to commit to an investment in healing for Indigenous peoples so we can begin this important reconciliation journey together.”
Bruce Hyer, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP (Thunder Bay – Superior North), continued, “Unanimous consent to table the TRC findings in the House is an important milestone in the road towards reconciliation. We must fully adopt and implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The TRC has recommended many steps to begin the process of reconciliation. We need more than apologies. We need meaningful action and full partnership.”
Elizabeth May concluded, “Greens have once again demonstrated that even a few MPs can foster collaboration and consensus. We must still adopt the findings of the TRC report and continue to strive for a Canada that works together. That’s what Canadians expect and what they deserve.”
