Central Nova Candidate David Hachey Energized, Optimistic

David Hachey

(OTTAWA) - With the recent announcement that incumbent Peter MacKay will not seek re-election in the upcoming federal election, and Liberal candidate David MacLeod stepping down hours later, David Hachey stands as the only confirmed federal candidate in the riding of Central Nova. The Green Party has great hopes for success in the riding with a strong candidate and comprehensive Green platform.

“Central Nova maintains healthy support for the Green Party and green ideals,” says Hachey. “Elizabeth May received 32% of the vote in 2008 and the infrastructure as well as the volunteers are still here - they've been waiting for this moment.  I received many calls and on Friday from a newly re-energized local Green movement. Elizabeth is doing an amazing job as Leader of the Green Party and has raised our profile considerably with her ideals and hard work - the time is now.”

Central Nova has voted Conservative for most of the last 50 years. Hachey, who studied economics at Harvard, is running for the Green Party because their platform recognizes that environmental costs are real costs.

“We are directly subsidizing industries to create jobs that also have indirect costs to the people and environment in which they operate,” Hachey says, mentioning the pulp mill in Pictou and controversial open-pen salmon farms along the Eastern Shore. "I am not against industry, but let's give local communities a say in which industries to promote based on a full cost accounting of their impacts. I wish Northern Pulp well as they undertake improvements to their equipment and hope they have a future in Pictou County. I also hope government holds them accountable to the people and places they impact with their operations.”

“I'm very pleased that David Hachey was nominated as the candidate for Central Nova,” stated Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party and MP (Saanich – Gulf Islands) “This riding is very special to me; it's where I ran in 2008, and given David’s dedication, experience and education, I know that he is precisely the quality of MP Central Nova residents need in the House of Commons.”

Hachey gives his best to outgoing MP Peter MacKay whose family has served Central Nova for almost 50 years.

“I would like to wish Peter the best of luck as he pursues the next chapter of his life,” Hachey concluded.  “He has a young family and I am sure he will enjoy spending more time with them.”
