(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP (Saanich – Gulf Islands), filed written evidence to the National Energy Board (NEB) today detailing her opposition to the Trans Mountain Expansion project.
“While I wholeheartedly agree with the many interveners and critics who have criticized the NEB review of this project as a deeply flawed process, I feel compelled to submit evidence that will dispute the most patently false claims made by Kinder Morgan,” said Ms. May.
“Diluted bitumen (dilbit) sinks in freshwater. There is emerging scientific evidence that it will also sink in saltwater. Any spill of dilbit, out of a pipeline or a tanker, would have disastrous environmental, economic and social consequences. I will continue to assert my rights to natural justice before the NEB. Despite the appearance of bias in the pattern of Board decisions, I must challenge Kinder Morgan’s claim that one study they performed in a fish tank in Alberta is sufficient to explain the properties of dilbit in the marine environment.
“I stand in solidarity with my fellow interveners and all Canadians in opposition to this reckless project. I would like to commend in particular the excellent work of Tsleil-Waututh Nation, whose comprehensive and forceful evidence presentation demonstrates that, yet again, it is Canada's First Nations that are taking a front line role in opposing reckless development projects.”
