Sylvie Lemieux CBC Interview: Leadership Race?

Hmm. I guess it HAS been awhile since I posted here. My last post was highlighting, and celebrating Councils decision last November to establish basic ground rules for a leadership race in 2010. It seems it was not convenient to honour the constitution, and council as usual failed to keep their own commitments to themselves. You see, if they had actually draughted a set of rules as required, then the argument that it would be too late to have a race because the rules had not been created would not hold water today, would they? In the event of a failure of the leader for life motion presented to the membership, this will be an obvious response, that we cannot have a race anyway, because there isn't enough time to set the rules.

The tiresome pretense that the whole leadership issue has been about impending elections is exploded by that one simple fact. Council decided to draft a set of rules, put the job into 'safe' hands, and set about eliminating present and future races in favour of a 'Review'. What a failure of responsibility. No postponement of a race, just apococalyptic statements that Elizabeth May was going to be forced to resign, and the only other option is to cancel this, and all future Leadership contests in favour of a review. Do not forget, the decision is still in your hands, that is to say, the memberships hands. Vote as you see fit, but do so fully informed of the stakes.

Sylvie Lemieux has put forward a motion to hold a leadership race for the membership to vote on. Never mind that this is the constitutionally mandated default position. She obviously felt she could not rely on our Leadership to honour the constitution should their review motion fail, so there it is explicitly laid out in black and white. If you want to have all your news about it interpreted and filtered by your GPC colleagues, then flip through the Leaders press releases. If you want to actually hear Sylvie articulate her position, and YOUR rights as members, then have a look at this interview on CBC's Power & Politics from yesterday. It is a lopsided campaign, with the GPC pulling out all the stops, and putting the full resources of the Party into stopping any competition cold, but you can still see for yourself if you should so desire:

The relevant interview starts 18:55 into the show, and lasts for 6 minutes. Enjoy it.

Sorry, the link doesn't activate the video..

Hmmm. I just clicked on the link, and it doesn't get you to the video. I think that there is an advertisement you have to watch first, so the direct hotlink doesn't work.

Go to the link:

and then in the search box type Power & Politics  and it will go straight to the July 19'th edition. Then, (after seeing a short ad) you can fast forward to 18:55, unless you want to hear the discussions on the Census Forms.

Impressive

If the motion succeeds for a leadership review; what happens then. Does it occur at the Convention? What is the scenario?

Respectfully, D. Scott Barclay

Since review is an amendment to the By-Laws

I am not a GPC constitutional expert. I am told that councils motion needs to be re-confirmed by the membership in a seperate mailout as an identically worded motion. That will be something like three months later. Then with the passage of time it passes into the by-laws. Then of course, there will be the usual latitude council grants itself in interpretation and enforcement. Simple answer is who knows when it would come into effect. Maybe after, maybe not after the next election if done constitutionally. Apparently enforcement of the constitution is optional anyway so who knows, not I.

Sylvies motin is a directive motion, directing council to enforce the existing rules. It will pass into effect immediately.
