The Promise of the Green Party of Canada

This is a cross post from http://www.davebagler.ca.

Over the past few elections the Green Party of Canada has been transitioning from a fringe movement to a serious Canadian political party.  It started with Jim Harris capitalizing on per vote funding to make a full time central office feasible.  It continued with Elizabeth May making herself, and through her the party, a household name in Canada.

I like so many Greens believe in our platform and believe that we have the best set of policies to lead this country.  It's true that we began as a single issue party.  We are no longer a single issue party but I think its important to remember that when it comes to that single issue, we were right.

As we have broadened our scope and professionalized our operations, we have of course broken a few eggs as all organizational omelets do.  This brings me to our title.  We have successfully convinced nearly 1 million Canadians that our vision is the best for our country.  Now we must work to ensure that we can begin making good on that promise by getting representation in the House of Commons.

I understand that some Green Party members believe that we should go back to the days of a single issue party.  They believe that electingMPs is an unnecessary distraction but it's simply not the case.

In order to implement our solutions to our first issue we must have comprehensive policies on all other issues.  We must present a broad vision to the Canadian public and I am proud that we are doing that.

I don't agree with every step the party has taken.  I'm sure no one does.  I do however believe that we are on the right track.  We have made mistakes but over and over again we have shown a willingness to learn from the those mistakes.  With each election we are becoming stronger.  With each election more Canadians are realizing that we are well within the main stream.  With each election we are moving closer to a day when the seats in the house of commons are green in more than just color.

The policies put forward by the Green Party are second to none.  The Green Party's attitude towards government and civic duty is second to none.  There is so much in this party for us to be proud of and we should be promoting and championing that each and every day.
