The real Bruce Carson story
If you enter the name “Bruce Carson” as a search term in Google News or some other search engine, you will find media links telling you a lot more than you want to know about the bizarre criminal, financial and sexual past of this former aide to Stephen Harper. One of the unanswered questions is how, with his past record, he obtained such an important position in the Prime Minister's Office. The answer given by Stephen Harper lies beyond credibility when compared with the public record and Carson's own statements.
In my own riding of Vancouver Island North, these stories have surfaced repeatedly (due to the Liberal candidate) because they involve our incumbent MP, John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. It's easy to take these swipes at Duncan because he rarely shows up at All Candidates' Meetings; in the 2008 election he missed half of them.
But the mainstream media have largely turned a blind eye to the real significance of the Bruce Carson story. It is this: in 2007, Industry Canada funded a $15 million dollar Centre for Excellence at the three Alberta universities (U. Of Alberta, U. Of Calgary, U. Of Lethbridge) named the Canada School of Energy and Environment. Shortly thereafter Bruce Carson was slid into place as its first director. On its website ( http://www.canadaschoolofenergy.com/ ) the goal of the CSEE is given “to contribute to a future of abundant supplies of clean energy, a vibrant and healthy environment, and sustainable prosperity and social well-being for Canadians.” That sounds pretty noble.
But according to CSEE's own reports, Bruce Carson wound up changing the think tank's mandate, leaving him in the middle of a government and industry strategy to green the image of the tar sands and delay regulations that would crack down on pollution. CSEE has not actually done any research. It has virtually ignored all aspects of sustainable energy. It has made huge public relations efforts to direct the academics at those universities to the service of the petroleum/bitumen industry
Carson was responsible for Harper's climate change strategy, which has always been to do as little as possible. Bruce Carson payed a key role in Canada's representation at the 2009 COP15 conference on climate change in Copenhagen. When the world's climate crisis went off the rails at Copenhagen, Bruce Carson was there, in service of the Harper Government™.

Exploring these links shows how deeply our our cherished institutions in this country have been prostituted by the current government. That is the real story the media are ignoring. That is the reality we all have to face.
