Harper proroguing parliament symptomatic of larger problems within our destructive political system
By Gary Brown
CAN WE GET OUR MONEY BACK? Maybe we should cut out three months of MPs salaries to make a point. I do not dismiss the work MP' do, most of it being in their ridings, but a point needs to be made.
Why does every issue have to be a confidence vote? I don't even agree with all of my parties policies and we have the right to vote against them without the party throwing us out or breaking up. We call this democracy.
This politics of confrontation that the mainstream parties practice is destructive. If the people don't like a policy then MPs should be free to vote against it. It is not a vote against the government. It is the people saying we don't agree with this policy. Is this such a difficult concept to grasp?
The Harper government needs to understand this and get on with the next policy.
Moving away from the antiquated form of government we practice would be a big start.
This country has never needed proportional representation more then now. It would usher in a government of cooperation instead of confrontation. It would bring more women and aboriginals to government. It would give the people a voice in government.
This macho crap of either vote for this policy or face an election has to stop. Its like the little child threatening to hold his breath until he gets his own way. It is time for our government to stop throwing tantrums and grow up.
It has become very obvious that Canadians do not trust any party to have absolute power over Canada.
We need input from all groups in our society to solve the issues of today. This requires debate and discussion; not the shutting down of parliament, not the absolutism of making everything a confidence vote and not the disenfranchising of most of the electorate.
It is time for change.

Liberals won't 'commit' to change
So who will? Ignatieff 'promised' not to act like Harper. But stopped short of committing to even requiring a 'majority vote' to prorogue.
"We have to think through whether that's a good way of doing it. I'm not sure," Ignatieff said.

And who can guarantee that Ignatieff will become PM or even last as the Liberal leader?
Its sad. He's so shell-shocked by the real world blood-sport of politics he's regressed back to the safety and comfort of academia; delivering 'lectures' to college students and avoiding the TV camera.
