How does risk management work for agriculture?

I am trying to get a handle on agriculture, because my EDA is a very large rural population, with many farmers. There appears to be 2 trains of thought, use risk management or raise costs across entire commodity groups. The present model is not helping the small farmer, as most of the money goes to large farms.

Here is a site that looks at some of the concerns.

Interesting Article

This is an interesting article.  Mr. Stevens offers some good points that deserve more attention in our current system.

As for risk management, I have little experience or background.

I think they do too. This

I think they do too. This article was forwarded to me by a farmer who has always voted liberal but is now looking for solutions from the green party. He is very supportive of the green party's small farm support but was interested in what direction we were going to take re: risk management or raising monies actually paid to the farmer.

Another interesting perspective.

The cenn article http://www.cenn.ca/cenn/index.cfm?DSP=content&ContentID=18929 was quite informative.

Here in Manitoba, the challenges I hear about are the need to get bigger to compete and earn enough to borrow more money to get bigger..................and so on.

As a society, we need to value the power and promise of the small farm.  Small family farms tend to have a farmer who knows his/her land and respects its ability/limitations to produce.  They will also protect the land and water to provide in the future rather than buying more land once it is exhausted.
