Police, tasers and people skills

When you give police weapons like tasers they don't have to learn and practice people skills. It's just giving them permission to be bullies.

Helpers instead of Enforcers

Yes. I have been thinking in the past few years: what if the police force were actually trained to be "Citizen Helpers" instead of "Law enforcers"? Totally different paradigm. Totally different training. Totally different results.

I have a friend who is now a policeman (a very good one of course) who sometimes sees people really out of control because of drugs. This is the main reason they get to have weapons and use force - for those times when people are drugged-out lunatics (and even here, I don't believe force is justified but then again I have never faced such a situation myself). But they carry their fears and training with them into situations with normal or upset or grieving people all the time - and they behave terribly (fear will do that). I have a friend, a teacher for many years, who had a bit of a breakdown shortly after her marriage ended. Her sister panicked and phone the police. Two women police officers showed up and my friend was so out of it she wasn't really aware why they were there. She ended up being taken down on the floor and then maliciously belittled by one of the officers. She didn't even tell me about the incident until about a year later - she was so ashamed and traumatized. What recourse does she have? She needed help for goodness sake, not that barbaric treatment she got (just because she wanted to show them a craft project she was working on and had reached for a pair of scissors).

A few weeks ago I parked illegally (without realizing it) at my brother's house because his giant work truck was in his driveway and I almost got stuck in the snow along the alley. A by-law officer knocked on the door and asked whose vehicle that was, and I jumped up and he explained that I was breaking the by-law. I thanked him profusely and apologized and moved my vehicle. We exchanged names and shook hands and I said "wow, this is so great - you are helping me instead of punishing me" and he said "yes, I see my job as helping people" and it just hit me so hard - that's the kind of society that I want to live in; one where we use our tax dollars to pay people to help people out when they don't know the laws or are having trouble obeying the laws. I know from parenting; punishment is not a long-term solution that actually helps people grow, flourish, and learn. There is a big difference between behaving in certain ways to avoid punishment vs. doing so because it is the right thing to do.

Tazers are way to dangerous

Tazers used on people who are having panic attacks (the main reason behind someone freaking out and throwing things and acting irrationally) and people high on drugs increases the person being tazered's risk for having a bad reaction or even dying. The reason behind this is because they are having a whole rush of different hormones some of which increase ones heart rate drastically so they can either run away “flight” or fight there way out of a situation “fight”. Tazering them while they are going through this process is very dangerous. Police do not have medical training and can’t judge how deep into this mental frame a person is and should not tazer them because of this.

Also using electricity on the human body above the waist is asking for trouble, the only people who should do this are medically trained people who know how to use paddles.

As it stands when a police officer arrives on scene they do not know the medical history of the person freaking out and because of that should subdue the person by other means instead of reaching for the tazer. They don’t know if the person in front of them has had previous heart troubles or has a heart condition, they don’t if the person is in full blown panic attack mode or high. They don’t even know if it’s a woman if she is with child and not showing (a tazer to a pregnant women in first trimester more than likely will lead to a miscarriage).

For those reasons I feel tazers should be band or only used in situations where an officer would shoot his or her gun.

Learning how to approach a situation without being dominant and arrogant but instead compassionate and trying to use people skills to talk someone down is something they all should be learning.

Tasers and Rules of Use

My personal opinion is that tasers are a much better choice than guns for police, but that we need to put in place rules that are similar for taser use as there are for gun use. Namely, if it is taken out and used the amount of paperwork is similar to the paperwork an officer has to fill out for use of a gun. That becomes a major deterrent to excessive use of tasers (no officer likes filling out paperwork) plus it would be reviewed by someone in authority to ensure it was used properly.

Tasers, properly used, can be a major asset. Lets not toss out the baby with the bathwater, rather lets find a better solution to encourage proper use. After all, with no tasers it is probable more deaths would've occurred due to use of firearms and that is something no one wants. Btw, does anyone have figures on deaths via police use of firearms over the years? I think that would be a worthwhile comparison point, crossed over with deaths from taser use.

TASERS !!

Hi,

I am only editing to again fix the links...sorry.

I totally disagree with Mr Northey and some others ....

But then I have some police training ....

and know the police failed horribly in the Polish case...

AS OBSOLUTLY NO RISK ASSESSMENT WAS DONE (something all police are taught FIRST !!and all  know !!!  and all these boys FAILED  HORRIBLY WITH !!)

AND THEY RAN IN YELLING .......CAN I TASER HIM !!!

I will also say I was trained how to kill the same way by breaking a neck with a knee.....watch the video !!

Sorry tasers should be replaced with pepper spray or even a $5 dollar net which I can prove is impossible to fight against !!

Please look at this forum as both sides are well represented here.

(Well as someone...some how ... keeps moving the link to a different page I must re-edit it)  -------------------------------------------------------------------------- link.......  http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums//index.php?showtopic=10292&st=0
