I would hope that this number immediately conveys meaning to all Canadians, and evokes some somber reflection.
I heard a couple of CBC interviews this week - one from the father of a fallen soldier, the other from a recovering wounded soldier and his wife. Both were very important testimonials to loss in war.
Regardless of opinion on what should be done in Afghanistan, it seems that we should all be united in our deep respect for those that have served, those that have been injured, and those that have fallen.
The men and women of the Canadian military and their families are tremedous examples of character, dedication, sacrifice, and service to their country.
We may not all agree on the reasons or need for armed conflict, but I am certain that we would all agree with a wish that it ends sooner than later, and with no more loss of great Canadians.
